A Fall Flute and Piccolo Recital
by Ashleigh Pitcher, SUNY Cortland student writer

Looking for a little variety to spice up your fall? Look no further. Maria R. Mucaria will be presenting a Fall Flute & Piccolo Recital. I had the chance to sit down with the musician herself to ask her a few questions about the performance.

AP: When and where will the recital be?
MM: Friday October 30th at 7:30pm. It will be held at the Grace and Holy Spirit Church located at 13 Court Street, Cortland NY.

AP: What is the price of admission?
MM: $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and children under 10 are free. If you bring a non- perishable food item, $1 will be taken off of the price of admission.

AP: I know you are a flute and piccolo performer, will other musicians be joining you?
MM: Yes, guest performers will include Marina Gorelaya on piano, soprano voice Jana M. H. Campbell, Armand DiScenna on Organ, Lois Pfister on violin, Meredith Mucaria on English horn, Aaron T. Baier on guitar and members of the Cortland Area Flute Ensemble; Alex Cottrell, Stephanie Hector, Jane Hunter, Terry Mingle, Ashleigh Pitcher and Jeanine Rose.

AP: Why did you choose to put on this recital?
MM: The original reason was because classical music festivals have almost disappeared from Cortland. There are less opportunities for the local talent to be showcased. I think it is important to keep the tradition of classical music alive.

AP: What kind of music will you be performing?
MM: I have prepared music from the Baroque, Romantic and all the way up to the twentieth century. I tried to choose music of different styles to keep the audience interested (she laughs).

AP: Which piece on the program was your favorite to prepare?
MM: If I had to choose, on the piccolo, it is the Vivaldi Piccolo Concerto in C Major. I like how it shows off the piccolo’s singing voice. The Vivaldi is very lyrical and beautiful. For the flute, one piece I’m looking forward to performing in public is the Prokofieff Flute Sonata. It really is hard to say which one is going to be my favorite to perform because the program is a compilation of many of my favorites.

A little about the performer:
Maria has a Bachelor in Music from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a Masters in Art from Long Island University. She has had unique opportunities and experiences in her professional career be it teaching, performing or directing. She has lived in the United Kingdom and taught classroom music there. She toured Italy and had the chance to perform in Carnage Hall. She created the Cortland Area Flute Ensemble (CAFE) in 2008. She saw an opportunity after several community members came to her looking for performing opportunities. The Cortland Area Flute Ensemble is a relaxed group for community members, college students and students from the local high schools to have a place to play flute, piccolo, alto and bass flutes.

Ashleigh Pitcher is a junior Professional Writing major at SUNY Cortland.
